Asian English Olympics 2015

Sooooooo......

This is late. Like SUPER late. Buttttttt..... DO YOU GUYS HAVE ANY IDEA HOW FAR OUR MEMBERS HAVE GONE?! :O

Our university was invited to send representatives to compete in The 7th Asian English Olympics organised by Binus University in Jakarta, Indonesia every year. We were to compete among the best of certain countries in Asia.

The English Department with Jonathan Moh, Victor Ong, and Dr.Nagiah, decided to send 3 fortunate members, based on their progress ;

Marilyn Lai
Mirosha Somasundram
Thinesh Naidu

Jonathan Moh was sent as an observer.

They were there from 9th February till 15th February 2015.

The participants were a part of the Speech session. There were multiple areas such as News casting, debate, Storytelling, etc. Well, we know why we took part in speech, don't we?

The contest officially commenced on 10th of February

This picture contains participants from Macau, Indonesia, The Philippines, and Malaysia.

The process of the whole contest was.... CRAZY. I mean it. Our contestants had to go through several rounds to proceed to the next level.

There were Preliminary Round 1 and 2, which was held for 2 days. Only after they make it through from top 64 to top 32, they get to enter Octo Finals. Octo Finals was the toughest yet, as it was Extemporaneous Speech. One of our contestant got through to the Quarter Finals ; Humorous Speech Round.

We are proud to announce that our member emerged as the top 10 out of the top 64 who competed from all over Asia.

The hospitality and great food made our members feel at home, and... they seriously did not feel like leaving. Cross my heart and i hope to die. The people there were so so friendly and the bond formed is going to remain for life.

The contest ended with a wonderful Gala Night. A large group selfie was taken to end this amazing journey.

This collage right here sums up pretty much everything. Though we did not make it into finals, we made it by becoming better speakers, making great friends, and learning new cultures.

Here is more of the contest journey compiled by the lovely Marilyn Lai on Youtube!

ENJOY!
